A Conversation About Coffee

I’ve always heard of this with kids, but never really understood it.  By THIS and IT, I mean the seriously endless questions an almost three year old can ask.  I also never expected it – Christopher has an incredible vocabulary (sorry to brag) and has always seemed to just GET words and their meanings.  But as of lately, this is how all of my conversations of gone:

“What is that?”

“It is HOT coffee.” (I emphasize HOT so he doesn’t want to touch or drink it)

“Hot?  What is hot?”

“Um, when something is really warm.”

“Warm?  OK.  Who made that coffee?”

“Daddy.”

“Daddy made that coffee for you?”

“Yup.”

“Why do you drink coffee?”

“Cause it tastes good.  But it’s hot, so don’t touch…”

“What does good mean?”

“Um, good is when something is yummy.”

“Yummy, what is yummy?”

“Uh, when something is good?”

I could go on and on and on – but the conversation is still going.  🙂

Now that he has discovered that every word can have different meanings to each of us, I wonder how soon it will be before he’ll discover the art of the lie.
